Nightly Nurture for Mums

Evening routine nurture wellbeing connection me time rest sleep Alison O'Sullivan Coaching

Today, in 3 minutes or less, you’ll learn:

  1. A consistent evening routine clears your mind, reduces stress, and prepares you for a fresh start.
  2. Dedicated evening family time helps maintain a healthy balance between business and home life.
  3. Relaxation, screen-free time, and outlining next-day priorities nurture well-being and focus.

After a long day of juggling family life and your business, the last hour of the day can feel like your only chance to exhale finally. I'm right there with you. I love that quiet scroll, a good show, or just zoning out once the house is still. Lately, however, I've been rethinking how I spend that time.

I've noticed that using it with a bit more intention—even just 15 minutes—makes such a difference to how I feel the next morning. I am calmer, clearer, and far more ready to focus when I sit down to work.

So, I've been experimenting with a gentle evening routine. Nothing rigid or perfect—just small steps to help me rest better, think clearer, and show up for both my family and my business with more energy.

Here's what I'm working on (and maybe you'd like to try too):

#1 Prioritise Connection

Even if it's brief, I try to be really present with the people I love:

  • Our bedtime routine with the kids (currently featuring a dinosaur-ball tournament and board games borrowed from the library).
  • A few uninterrupted minutes catching up with my husband—even if it's just a chat over the dishes.

It helps me end the day with connection rather than feeling like I'm just ticking off the final to-do's.

#2 Make Tomorrow Easier

I take a few minutes to prep for the day ahead. This might include:

  • Reviewing my Trello board and calendar.
  • Writing down my top priorities for tomorrow.
  • I do the dishes, load the washing machine, sort lunchboxes and lay out uniforms.
  • A quick tidy-up—just enough to help morning-me.

It clears my mind and reduces the mental clutter that often hits when my head hits the pillow.

#3 A Moment Just For Me

After our kids are settled, I take 5–30 minutes for something that fills my cup. That might be:

  • A decaf tea (always).
  • Listening to music.
  • Reading a good book.
  • A warm shower or bath.
  • My skincare routine.
  • I jot down a few thoughts—what I'm grateful for, what went well today, or what I'm working toward (still working on this being a more regular ritual).

This all helps me to shift from busy brain to rest mode.

#4 Set up for better sleep

Because let's be honest—all our businesses needs a well-rested CEO.

  • I aim for at least seven hours of sleep (working on that!).
  • Screens off an hour before bed (yes, that one's hard).
  • Comfy pillows and PJs.
  • A wind-down routine that helps my body and brain to rest.

Even just one of these minor tweaks can help your nights feel more grounding—and your mornings more energised. You deserve that. Of course, this will also be dictated by your season of life, and you can only do what you can manage, especially if you have babies or very small children. In those times, rest trumps everything.

Try choosing one little habit this week to build into your evenings—and see how it shifts things for you.

I'd love to know: what's one thing you could add or remove from your night to help your mornings feel calmer?
